One of the leading causes of sea turtle death in the Mediterranean Sea is sea turtle entanglement with fishing activity. The Life MedTurtles project in Tunisia has already begun to examine this occurrence and test several ways (such as using LED lights) to reduce the impact of this threat on sea turtle populations. To attain consistent results, it is important to continue the experimentation with various fishing tools and fishing seasons. A special thanks to the Tunisian fishermen for their invaluable assistance in carrying out these experiments.
The goal of employing LED lights is to determine whether or whether this technology helps sea turtles migrate away from fishing gear, hence minimizing their disturbance by this gear while maintaining their numbers. To attain consistent results, we must continue to experiment with various fishing tools and fishing seasons.
Finally, we’d like to thank the Tunisian fishermen for their invaluable assistance in carrying out these experiments.
